Safety Attention of Using Centrifuges

Aug. 13, 2021

HUADA shares how to use the centrifuges safely with you, pay attention to safety!

Before use

Follow all manufacturer's care instructions to avoid metal fatigue, deformation and corrosion. Develop and implement strict cleaning, storage and maintenance protocols.

Use only manufacturer-compatible centrifuges, rotors, barrels, caps, and adapters, and replace centrifuge components, including bottles, tubes, and O-rings, at the first sign of damage.

Assemble bottles, buckets and rotors according to the manufacturer's instructions, tightly seal all tubes and safety cups, and operate with the lid closed, allowing for a complete stop before opening if there is an incident.

Safe Handling

Use safety cups whenever possible and sanitize or clean weekly, after any spills or breakage.

Lubricate O-rings and rotor threads weekly. Do not operate the centrifuge without the rotor properly balanced and do not use a dropped rotor. If using an overspeed device, check the speed disc for signs of damage and discontinue use if damaged. Check the rotor and tube cavity for signs of damage, and if damaged, discontinue use.

With swing bucket rotors

Ensure that all metal buckets are in place, using matching buckets, caps and adapters, and that the load is symmetrical to the rotation axis and pivot within the manufacturer's recommended load tolerances. Finally, ensure that the bucket is properly secured to the rotor and that the rotor is properly connected to the centrifuge spindle.

Using fixed angle rotors

Properly tighten the rotor cap, properly install the rotor and attach it to the spindle.

Gently pull up on the rotor to verify that the rotor is attached. If you suspect a centrifuge leak, leave the area and do not open the centrifuge for at least 30 minutes to allow aerosols to settle, then enter the site while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and taking the necessary precautions.

To reduce rotor failure

Record the date of purchase for each rotor, as well as the date of manufacture and serial number.

Before using the equipment, read the machine's operating manual and follow the rotor and tube manufacturer's specifications. Keep the manual near the equipment for easy reference.

Follow the manufacturer's operating instructions. The maximum speed and sample density ratings specified by the manufacturer for each rotor are intended to prevent stress failure.

Before running the ultracentrifuge, verify that the classification label on the ultracentrifuge matches the classification label on the rotor.

Cleaning

Moisture, chemicals, powerful cleaners and other substances can corrode centrifuge components.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning: Keep the centrifuge clean and dry, clean with distilled water and a mild detergent, then dry the surface thoroughly. Do not use strong alkaline or acidic cleaners, which can damage finishes and corrode metal enclosures.
