Hazardous Handling of Screen Worm Centrifuges

Aug. 18, 2021

There are several important guidelines for operating a screen worm centrifuge, even a small one. Following these guidelines will prevent damage to the centrifuge and the potential for serious injury to you and others.

Notes on use

1. The work surface must be flat and firm. Do not use the screen worm centrifuge on an uneven or sloping work surface.
2. Balance the test tubes in the rotor!  If you want to run a tube with 10mL of liquid, place another tube with 10mL of water in a diagonal hole in the rotor. If the liquid is more or less dense than the water, you must balance the test tubes by mass, not volume.
3. Do not open the lid while the rotor is moving. Although many centrifuges have a "safety shut-off" if the lid is opened, the only thing this does is stop powering the rotor. The rotor will still spin for a while due to its own inertia until the friction slows down and eventually stops spinning.
4. If you see it wobble or shake, turn it off or unplug it. A little vibration is normal, but too much vibration can mean danger. First, double check that you have balanced the tube correctly. If the answer is yes, and shaking still occurs, contact the manufacturer or distributor to have the unit serviced. Do not continue to run a centrifuge that is visibly shaking while the rotor is spinning.
5. If you must work near a screen worm centrifuge in use, wear a face shield and/or safety goggles.
6. Do not bump, hit or move the centrifuge while the rotor is spinning. Make sure you are not hanging a rope over the edge of the table so that someone can catch the rope with their foot and pull the centrifuge down.

Hazardous Handling

When handling biohazardous materials, the following centrifugation procedures should be used:
1, Inspect tubes and bottles for cracks or signs of stress prior to use. Discard any centrifuge tubes that are discarded with cracks.
2, When handling biohazardous materials, wipe the outside of the tubes with a disinfectant before removing them from the bio-safety cabinet and placing them in the safety cup or rotor.
3, Place all tubes in the safety cup or sealed rotor when centrifuging infectious material. Inspect the "O" ring seal of the safety cup and the inside of the safety cup or rotor.
4, Open the safety bucket or rotor in the biosafety cabinet.
5, If there are visible spills or leaks inside the centrifuge rotor, clean with a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly with distilled water and allow to air dry completely (in the biosafety cabinet).
6, Clean the rotor and centrifuge adequately after each use.
